Romain Grosjean: 5 Facts

Renault have confirmed that GP2 driver Romain Grosjean will be replacing Nelson Piquet with immediate effect. He will partner double world champion Fernando Alonso for the remainder of the season. Although his GP2 season has been marred by some spectacular accidents, Renault genuinely believe that he will be a star. The lowest point of his GP2 season would be the accident at Monte Carlo; an impact which tore a 30cm hole in the tub. He has won two races this season, but will be relishing the challenge of a full time formula one drive. While it will not take any of the gloss away from his debut, Grosjeans race promotion comes on the back of a very public dispute between Nelson Piquet and Flavio Briatore.

Here are some interesting facts:

• Romain Grosjean was born in Geneva, Switzerland on the 17th of April 1986. He is the son of a French father and a Swiss mother.

• He competes under a French competition racing license, although he is of French-Swiss dual citizenship.

• His racing career started comparatively late at the age of fourteen.

• Grosjean was made Renault test driver as a replacement for Nelson Piquet; who was promoted to the Renault F1 race seat.

• On the strength of the results in junior categories, his first proper Formula 1 test was at Barcelona in 2008, when he completed 60 laps in a Renault R28.

We wish him all the very best in his Formula One debut, and for the rest of the season.
