Couthard faces fine, suspension over India speeding

Former Formula 1 ace David Coulthard is facing a major fine and possible suspension from driving in India after going 160 mph – almost three times the agreed upon speed limit – during an exhibition drive in Mumbai designed to drum up support for a future Formula 1 race in India.

Driving one of the cars from his former Red Bull team, Coulthard tore down a specially designated section of road 100 mph faster than the limit set for the test. Afterward, Coulthard apologized and said that he had trouble going that slow or known how fast he was going, but that explanation didn’t seem to be sufficient for local officials.

Satish Gavai, managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, said: ‘I have asked my officers to submit a report on the event.

“Action will be considered only after it is established that the vehicle went beyond permissible speed limits on the sea link.”
