JD Power and Associates

Founded by James David Power III in 1968 is a global marketing information services firm. It conducts customer satisfaction surveys, product quality, buyer behavior surveys for vehicles to marketing companies. It is best known for its new car customer satisfaction surveys, car quality and long-term dependability surveys. It is a unit of McGraw-Hill, an information and media group who bought the firm in April 2005 from JD Power III. It is headquarted in Thousand Oaks, California.

JD Power is well known for its automotive reviews. It conducts multiple annual reviews of U.S. and other car makers. Its Initial Quality Study (IQS) measure problems encountered within 90 days of owning a vehicle while its Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measure problems encountered by the owners after three years of ownership. Other surveys include the APEAL survey, dealership service surveys, and customer purchasing experience surveys. The IQS and VDS are conducted in many countries including but not limited to U.K., France, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil, India and China.

JD Power surveys customers for products from samples of many thousands to over 100,000 at its expense. Its ratings are based on those surveys. It also conducts in-house vehicle tests. Majority of its income comes from companies who seek their survey data.
